Splendora ISD Temperature Protocol

Outdoor activity is an important part of the school day and is encouraged whenever conditions allow. However, there may be times when outdoor activities must be limited or suspended due to extreme weather conditions.

Current local temperatures, including heat index and wind chill, will be monitored using the National Weather Service website.

Hot Weather Protocol

During periods of excessive heat, the following guidelines will be used to determine whether students may participate in outdoor activities, including recess, physical education, and other outdoor activities:

• Students will remain indoors when the temperature and/or heat index reaches 95°F or higher.
• When the temperature or heat index exceeds 85°F, additional precautions will be taken. Outdoor activity time and intensity may be reduced, and students must have access to water during and after outdoor activities.

Cold Weather Protocol

During periods of excessive cold, the following guidelines will be used to determine whether students may participate in outdoor activities, including recess, physical education, and other outdoor activities:

• Students will remain indoors when the temperature and/or wind chill falls below 40°F.
• If a staff member determines that a student does not have appropriate clothing for the weather conditions, the student may be excused from participating in outdoor activities.

Secondary students who are intentionally being acclimated to outdoor conditions for co-curricular activities will follow the guidelines established by their coaches, athletic trainers, and/or sponsors. Students will be closely monitored, and student safety will remain the highest priority when making decisions regarding outdoor participation.

Some students and staff members may require additional precautions based on individual circumstances.
