What's in the Box?

Three 4th year culinary arts students participate in a mystery box lab

The Practicum in Hospitality Services students just wrapped up their exciting mystery box lab, modeled after the popular TV show Chopped, and it was a culinary adventure! These 4th-year chefs-in-training, led by teacher Brittney Denton, were challenged to whip up creative dishes while honing their time management, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Their ingredients? Pork chops, leftover rice, a bell pepper, and... a granola bar! With access to a few extra pantry staples, the students brainstormed, plotted, and cooked up their masterpieces.

The tension was high as two brave volunteer judges (teachers) sampled the impressive dishes, evaluating both plating and taste. The biggest curveball? The granola bar! Some students cleverly used it as a crispy breading for their pork chops, while others mixed it into the rice or crumbled it on top for a sweet twist. The results were mouthwatering, and the creativity was off the charts!

What a deliciously fun lesson!
