Turnip the Beet Gold Award Recipient

Charles Rawls and Crystal Cantu and Turnip the Beet Recognition

Splendora ISD is proud to announce that we received the USDA Turnip the Beet Gold Award for 2024, a prestigious honor that recognizes our commitment to serving high-quality summer meals that fuel student success throughout the year.

The Turnip the Beet! Awards spotlight outstanding summer meal programs across the nation that go above and beyond to serve meals that are not only nutritious but also appetizing and appealing to children. This year, USDA recognized 199 winners nationwide—86 Gold, 91 Silver, and 22 Bronze—and Splendora ISD is thrilled to shine as a Gold Award recipient!

During the summer months, millions of children across the U.S. face an increased risk of food insecurity without access to daily school meals. Programs like the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP/SUN Meals) and the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) help bridge that gap.

At Splendora ISD, our child nutrition team worked tirelessly to make sure every meal served was packed with fresh fruits, crisp vegetables, and hearty whole grains—giving children the daily energy they need to play, grow, and return to school healthy and ready to learn in the fall.

By earning the Gold Award, Splendora ISD stands among the nation’s best in ensuring that kids don’t just get fed—they thrive! This achievement reflects Splendora ISD’s mission of “Cultivating Exceptional People.” From our dedicated nutrition staff to our district leadership, we know that serving high-quality meals is more than food—it’s about building healthier futures for our students.

“We are incredibly proud of Child Nutrition Director Charles Rawls, Quality Control Training Coordinator  Crystal Cantu, the team, and thankful for the support of our community as we continue to serve with purpose,” said Dr. Dustin Bromley, Superintendent.

Congratulations, Wildcats! Together, we are making a difference—one nutritious meal at a time.
