Growing Our Own

Grow Our Own Tree

Across the nation, school districts are facing teacher shortages, but Splendora ISD is taking a proactive approach—growing its own educators from within the community. Through multiple pathways designed for both students and current staff, the district is creating opportunities for aspiring educators to gain experience, earn credentials, and step confidently into the classroom.

From high school programs to paraprofessional advancement and university partnerships, Splendora ISD currently offers six different pathways that help cultivate future teachers while strengthening the district’s workforce.

Elevate: From Paraprofessional to Certified Teacher

The Elevate Program supports paraprofessionals seeking teacher certification. Through partnerships with Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) and Teachworthy, eligible paraprofessionals complete college coursework and certification training while continuing to work in the classroom.

This job-embedded model allows participants to gain valuable teaching experience while earning the credit hours required for certification. Currently, 26 Splendora ISD paraprofessionals are enrolled in the program and working toward full teacher certification.

Ready, Set, Teach: Inspiring Future Educators in High School

At Splendora High School, the Ready, Set, Teach Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathway introduces students to the education profession early. Students study child development, instructional practices, and classroom management while participating in a practicum experience where they assist certified teachers.

The program provides hands-on learning in real classrooms, helping students discover whether teaching is the right career for them. Once students turn 18 and meet program requirements, they become eligible to earn their Educational Aide Level I certification. Currently, 173 students are enrolled in the Ready, Set, Teach program.

Associate of Arts in Teaching: A Head Start on College

The Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) pathway, now part of Splendora Early College High School, allows students to earn a college degree while still completing their high school education. Through a partnership with Lone Star College, students take a structured sequence of education-focused college courses.

This program prepares students to transfer directly into a teacher preparation program at a university and significantly accelerates their path to teacher certification. Seven Splendora High School students are currently on track to graduate with their AAT degree.

SHSU Residency Program: Immersive Classroom Experience

Through a partnership with Sam Houston State University, the SHSU Residency Program places student teachers on Splendora ISD campuses for a full-year clinical experience.

These residents work closely with mentor teachers while receiving coaching and support from both university faculty and district staff. The residency model provides aspiring teachers with real-world experience and the opportunity to actively support classroom instruction. Five SHSU student teachers are currently completing their residency in Splendora ISD.

Summer Internships: Hands-On Experience Beyond the School Year

Since the summer of 2024, Splendora ISD has also offered paid summer internships for students in the Ready, Set, Teach program. During summer school, interns assist teachers and work directly with students, gaining valuable classroom experience in a supportive environment.

This initiative not only strengthens the district’s educator pipeline but also helps students build confidence and practical skills. Since launching the program, 20 student interns have participated in summer internships.

GEARS: Expanding Career Exploration

The GEARS (Growing Exceptional, Adaptable, Resourceful Students) program allows students in multiple CTE pathways to complete their Level 3–4 practicums by interning with Splendora ISD personnel.

Many participants choose to work alongside elementary teachers, giving them direct classroom experience and the chance to explore education as a future career. Currently, 10 students are enrolled in GEARS and are assisting teachers across the district.

By offering multiple entry points into the teaching profession, Splendora ISD is building a strong pipeline of future educators who already know the district, its students, and its community. These programs not only provide valuable learning experiences but also ensure that passionate, well-prepared teachers continue to serve Splendora classrooms for years to come.

Through innovation, partnerships, and a commitment to developing talent from within, Splendora ISD is proving that sometimes the best teachers are the ones who grow right here at home.
