Letter from Superintendent Burke
June 4, 2020
As you may be aware, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) released guidance on allowing athletics and marching band activities to potentially resume on June 8th, pending local decision. These guidelines were formed in conjunction with the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and currently are the only student groups allowed to participate. We have continued to receive questions about school-sponsored programs other than athletics and band, including FFA, cheerleading, clubs, etc. TEA is expected to release guidance late this week or early next week on these other student activities. Again, it is our expectation that each district will have local control over this decision, but we will wait until we receive the specific guidance from TEA to make those decisions. In addition, Governor Abbott, in his previous order, allowed youth camps to continue and provided guidelines for these as well.
The guidelines for allowing groups back to school are extensive and our administration has been working diligently on putting processes in place for this to happen safely. Splendora ISD created a “Reintegration Task force” to research, compile information, and make recommendations about reintegration at all levels and impact on programs, activities, camps, students, and staff. The difficulty is that new guidelines are released on a daily to weekly basis as we learn more about the impact of COVID-19.
As you can imagine, working through these guidelines is tedious and time-consuming. We all want to reconnect with our students and provide them access to activities as soon as we can, as long as we can keep them as safe as possible while doing so. In closing, as soon as we have the guidance from TEA, we will release information about resuming these activities. Thank you, as always, for entrusting us with your children.
Dr. Jeff Burke
Superintendent of Schools
