Splendora High School will be offering students the opportunity to take Driver Education during our summer school session. Seats will be limited to the first 30 students who apply and meet the qualifications. Students must complete the application and return it to Mrs. Guerrero in the counselor's office. Applications will be considered in the order that she receives them. Applications sent to anyone other than Mrs. Guerreo will be recorded in the order that Mrs. Guerrero receives them Students must be 15 or turning 15 before January 1 of 2019. The course will be an ONLINE course taught by an instructor from Region 6 Service Center and facilitated by an SISD employee. STUDENTS MUST REGISTER THROUGH THE SISD APPLICATION PROCESS - NOT THROUGH THE REGION CENTER.
Students will have access to the ONLINE CURRICULUM for the classroom portion of the Drivers Education course only. The behind the wheel portion will NOT be offered. Instructions will be provided at the end of the course that explains to parents how to transition students to Parent Taught Behind the Wheel through the Region Center. There will be a $50.00 fee charged by the Region Center if parents choose this option. The other option for the Behind the Wheel portion is to use a commercial service to fulfill this requirement. Upon completion of the course, students will be issued a certificate by Region 6 that they can use at the Department of Public Safety to take the exam and obtain their permit.
The ONLINE COURSE BEGINS JUNE 4 and ENDS JULY 13. This is longer than our summer school session that ends on June 22. The Driver Education Class will meet as follows.
June 4 - 21: During regular summer school hours the Driver Education course will meet Monday - Thursday from 8:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m.
June 26 and June 28: Optional Days - the facilitator will be available from 9:00 to 11:00 to assist students that need help or access to a computer and internet.
July 10, 11, and 12: The facilitator will be available from 8:00 to 11:00 to monitor Final Exams for the course. ALL FINAL EXAMS MUST BE MONITORED BY THE FACILITATOR -- THE STUDENT MUST ATTEND ONE OF THESE TESTING DAYS TO COMPLETE THE COURSE.
Transportation, breakfast, and lunch will be provided through our summer school program, but there will not be transportation provided after June 21. Parents are required to provide transportation for the week of July 10-13 for students to complete their final exam. For students without internet at home, a hot spot can be checked out from the high school library for the weeks after June 22 when summer school is not in session.
