Welcome to Kindergarten
Welcome to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his/her school career! I would like to take the opportunity to introduce myself My name is Crystal Parker. I am your child’s Kindergarten teacher at Peach Creek Elementary School. I am originally from Houston, Texas, but now reside in The Woodlands, Texas. I graduated from Sam Houston University with a Bachelors Degree in Science with Early Childhood Education. I was also accepted into the Golden Key International Honor Society at Sam Houston State and participated in a writing workshop this summer. I am now working on my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction to better serve your students. There is always room for ideas and for a teacher to grow.
During Kindergarten, your child will learn how to read short sentences, write, add, subtract, and so much more. I hope to instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child's years of schooling. It is extremely important to keep in mind that we all build on small successes. Each child will progress at his/her own pace, acquiring skills as he/she is developmentally ready. Maintaining each child's self-esteem and building a secure foundation for future growth will always remain a priority in our first grade. Here are some ways you can help:
Starting Off the School Year
Folders: Every day your child will take home his/her folder and bring it back. It may contain important announcements, homework assignments or completed work. Please take your child’s work out and initial the behavior folder each day! I will grade the work they do in class each day. If I feel they were not doing their work in class, I will write “off task” on the paper or a sad face. When you see this, please talk to them and make sure that they understand why it is important to do their work at school. It is very important that your child brings this back to school each day. This will help create a routine and continue the communication between home and school.
Important Information: I will be updating my website on-line regularly. This will help you to be involved in what your child will be doing.
Behavior Management : Your child will have a weekly/monthly behavior sheet in their folder. The behavior system I am using goes along with the theme of a book. The book is called, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” by Carol McCloud. If you can find the book and read it to your child. I will do as well with the class. This is how the system works. If your child had a happy day, you will see a star that is a green sticker or a stamp in the square for that day. If you see a number in the square along with a yellow or red frown face , please refer to our list of class rules. The number in the square will correspond to the rule that your child had trouble with. For example, if you see a 3 in the square, look at the first rule. The rule was, “Stay in your seat unless you have permission to get up.” Please have a talk with your child about why it is important to sit quietly in their seat (so they can listen and learn). Then have them practice it once or twice at home. When they have yellow they had a little trouble throughout the day. Consider this more of a warning. If they receive red, this means they had a lot of trouble. Please initial each day on their behavior folder! Please help me to form your child into a bucket filler!
Class Rules
1. Always follow directions the first time.
2. Raise your hand and wait to be called on before speaking.
3. Stay in your seat unless you have permission to get up.
4. Be kind with your words and your actions.
5. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
Consequences
1st offense is a verbal warning.
2nd offense is a time out.
3rd offense is a note or phone call home.
4th offense is a phone call home/principal referral (varies on the situation).
Reading Counts: Library day for the class is Wednesday! If your child has a reading counts book they need to read it numerous times. This needs to be done before they take the test at school. I will try to help them take the test in my room when there is time. Sometimes students from other grades try to come by and help. I try to be fair and take turns with all of the students. They will read the book with me or other students before they take the test! Students will be given reading counts books later in the year when they have grown their reading. If there were any parents that want to help the students with their tests, it would be greatly appreciated.
Snack Time: There is no required snack time but I would be happy to give the class a snack each day if parents bring it. If you bring something you must bring enough for the whole class. Candy bars, cokes, etc are not allowed. Please do not bring anything with high sugar content. Healthy snacks such as, animal crackers, pretzels, and goldfish, are welcomed. They may also have a water bottle to drink throughout the day. Make sure it does not leak and is easy for them to open. NO OTHER DRINKS BUT WATER.
Birthdays: Please let me know in advance if you plan on bringing in a treat for your child to share with the class.
Toys/Personal Valuables These should not be brought to school. If they are, they are at the child’s risk. They will be taken up and given to the Principal.
