Message from the Superintendent, Dr. Thomas Price -

REACH Academy sees first graduates

Not all students want to attend high school in the traditional way. So Splendora ISD has added a new option. The REACH Academy is an alternative education program available for Splendora ISD students who may benefit from a non-traditional environment.  The Academy allows students to recover credits in core subject areas, to earn the credits necessary to graduate on schedule, and to meet state assessment standards.  The REACH Academy provides a flexible, self-paced learning environment, using individual and computer-aided instruction, self-esteem enhancement, and a quality, caring staff to help each student reach their goals.

Flexible scheduling means students may either choose to attend a morning session or afternoon session giving the students alternatives to meet their individual needs.  The REACH Academy offers instruction in the four core subject areas of math, science, language arts, and social studies using technology and individual teacher instruction. The program is already having success, graduating three students who might not have graduated through traditional means.

 Brandon Allen

When her father was killed in an auto accident, Brandon Allen felt as if her world was on “pause,” and everyone else was on “play.” She tried to cope when she returned to school, but two other family tragedies within a week was more than the 17-year old could bear. When on the verge of dropping out, her mother pleaded with the high school counselor for an option. She was given one and Brandon took full advantage becoming the first REACH Academy graduate. Although she hasn’t decided on a career, she plans to attend college at Lone Star College – Kingwood.

 Jenna Ables

Jenna Ables was being home schooled when Assistant Principal Betsy McDaniel called her about the REACH Academy. Within three weeks, Jenna re-enrolled, earned the ½ credit needed to receive her diploma, and will join her class at commencement exercises in June. She is already planning to attend college to become an anesthetist.

 Jeff Moore

Jeff Moore would be the first to admit he wasn’t attending school like he should. But when given the choice to complete his English and Government credits in an alternative method, he jumped on the chance. He completed his coursework in a month and now has joined the ranks of high school graduate. His interests lie in culinary arts and he hopes to attend college this fall to pursue this goal.

Additionally in the REACH Academy, students may earn elective credits through computer instruction and instructional packets prepared by certified teachers.  In some ways, the self-paced instruction can be harder for some students because they must have self-discipline to work independently, but students can recover lost credits more quickly than with traditional instructional methods. And for some students it is just what they need. “Don’t drop out when you are so close, because there are always options,” stated Brandon Allen.
